Dear Harald,
It was a real sorrow that I heard this
morning of your great loss. I knew your mother was ill, for your brother told
me several weeks ago. However, as he at that time did not seem to think the
illness was very serious, the news of your mother’s death came to me as a
shock. You have my sincere and heartfelt sympathy, my dear fellow, in your
sorrow. I know you will feel it deeply, for you always thought so much of your
mother and loved her so truly. I feel it also as a personal loss to myself, for
your mother was always very kind to me. Her death must be a terrible grief to
your father, too. Please assure him of my sincere sympathy.
Words, I know, are poor comforters. “The
heart knows its own sorrow”, and in such sorrows we are always alone. However,
it is not mere words when I say that I feel with you in your sorrow.
Your sincere friend,
Jack

A long time ago, there lived on
the island of Bali a giant-like creature named Kebo Iwo. The people of Bali
used to say that Kebo Iwo was everything, a destroyer as well as a creator. He
was satisfied with the meal, but this meant for the Balinese people enough food
for a thousand men.
Difficulties arose when for the first time the barns were almost empty and the new harvest was
still a long way off. This made Kebo Iwo wild with great anger. In his hunger,
he destroyed all the houses and even all the temples. It made the Balinese turn
to rage.
So, they came together to plan
steps to oppose this powerful giant by using his stupidity. They asked Kebo Iwo
to build them a very deep well, and rebuild all the houses and temples he had
destroyed. After they fed Kebo Iwo, he began to dig a deep hole.
One day he had eaten too much,
he fell asleep in the hole. The oldest man in the village gave a sign, and the
villagers began to throw the limestone they had collected before into the hole.
The limestone made the water inside the hole boiling . Kebo Iwo was buried
alive. Then the water in the well rose higher and higher until at last it
overflowed and formed Lake Batur. The mound of earth dug from the well by Kebo
Iwo is known as Mount Batur.

Bruno Mars – Count on me
If
you ever find yourself stuck in the middle of the sea,
I'll sail the world to find you
If you ever find yourself lost in the dark and you can't see,
I'll be the light to guide you
Find
out what we're made of
When we are called to help our friends in need
You
can count on me like one two three
I'll be there
And I know when I need it I can count on you like four three two
You'll be there
'Cause that's what friends are supposed to do, oh yeah
Whoa,
whoa, Oh, oh
Yeah, yeah
If
you tossin' and you're turnin' and you just can't fall asleep
I'll sing a song
Beside you
And if you ever forget how much you really mean to me
Everyday I will
Remind you
Ooh
Find out what we're made of
When we are called to help our friends in need
You
can count on me like one two three
I'll be there
And I know when I need it I can count on you like four three two
You'll be there
'Cause that's what friends are supposed to do, oh yeah
Oh,
oh
Yeah, yeah
You'll
always have my shoulder when you cry
I'll never let go
Never say goodbye
You know you can
Count
on me like one two three
I'll be there
And I know when I need it I can count on you like four three two
And you'll be there
'Cause that's what friends are supposed to do, oh yeah
Oh,
oh
You can count on me 'cause I can count on you

Eiffel Tower is an iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris.
Built in 1889, it has become both a global icon of France and one of the most
recognizable structures in the world. The tower is the tallest building in
Paris and the most-visited paid monument in the world; millions of people
ascend it every year.
Named for its designer, engineer
Gustave Eiffel, the tower was built as the entrance arch to the 1889 World's
Fair. The tower stands 324 metres (1,063 ft) tall, about the same height as an
81-story building. Upon its completion, it surpassed the Washington Monument to

for 41 years, until the Chrysler Building in New York City was built in 1930;
however, due to the addition in 1957 of the antenna, the tower is now taller
than the Chrysler Building. Not including broadcast antennas, it is the
second-tallest structure in France after the 2004 Millau Viaduct.
The tower has three levels for

and second levels. The walk to the first level is over 300 steps, as is the

Many floods are
directly related to weather change. Flooding is caused by extremely high rates
of rainfall or an unusually long period of rain. Additionally, areas that experience
a great deal of snow in winter are prone to springtime flooding when the snow
and ice melt, especially if the thaw is relatively sudden. Furthermore,
rainfall and snowmelt can sometimes combine to cause floods.
Floods also occur as a result of a
unique combination of factors that only indirectly involve weather conditions.
For instance, a low-lying beach area has the potential to flooding whenever the
ocean is at high tide. Exceptionally high tides may occur due to storms caused
by a combination of factors, like low barometric pressure and high winds.
Finally, floods sometimes can occur regardless of the climate. Seismic waves on
the sea or large lakes that are caused by earthquakes are some examples. Volcanic
heating and rapid melting of snow atop a volcanic mountain or under a glacier,
or even failures of natural or man-made dams are other examples.
38.
According to the
text above, what is the main cause of flooding?
A. High rates of
rainfall
B. Changes in
weather
C. High winds
D. High tides
E. A storm
39.
Springtime flooding
occurs in area whenever …
A. it rains heavily
B. tsunami happens
C. a volcano erupts

melt
E. the ocean is at
high tide
